Successful trans-Atlantic workshop

Our trans-Atlantic collaboration has begun, with particular focus on Science and Biotechonology. May 18 and 19 many attended the University of Oslo (UiO) for an exciting workshop in these scholastic fields of study. Visitors from the United States included the Carnegie Institution for Science (CIS), Craig Venter Institute, Walter Reed Army Institute for Research and teachers from McKinley Technology High School og Ballou Senior High School. Contributors from Norway were participants from the following institutions: Oslo Cancer Cluster (OCC), the medical faculty at UiO, the Institute of teachers training and school development at UiO (ILS), the Sciences center at UiO, and Ullern High school (teachers and heads of staff). Other participants included members of the National board of education in Oslo, NHO, Forskningsrådet and the American Embassy.

The goal of the workshop was to exchange experience and discuss how to accomplish successful collaborative projects between schools, research and development and business enterprises. Our American guests have extensive experience in such networking projects and are therefore valuable partners. A further goal was to establish concrete Trans-Atlantic projects between the various groups. Biology teachers Eileen Klavenes and Ragni Fet from Ullern High School have already initiated a network project with the participants from Washington. The group are planning a nutrition project in Science at VG1 level and an exciting criminology project in Biology, just like CSI! Several other projects have been initiated on different levels, and these will definitely be exciting to follow in the future.
